3. I want to send supplies or other items to Tanzania. How do I do that?

We appreciate your inquiries about donating supplies to the communities we support in Tanzania, and are touched by your generosity. Interestingly enough, sending goods directly to projects in Tanzania can be problematic for a number of reasons. If you send supplies and the mail actually gets to its destination, it must go through customs; all packages are subject to customs fees and import taxes, which the person receiving the supplies must pay out of pocket to collect these packages. These fees and taxes sometimes exceed the actual value of the goods being donated. Frequently the goods that people want to donate are already available in Tanzania; it’s the money to buy those goods that is not. We also strongly support financial donations as opposed to gifts of goods, because financial gifts support the local economy, while donated goods do not.

If you want to support these communities, we recommend making a monetary contribution to FoTZC. We have the infrastructure in place to ensure that funds are appropriately allocated and that the projects get the most out of each dollar donated. In addition to providing supplies, FoTZC can undertake larger projects that make a huge difference to these communities in the long-term, particularly construction projects.
