Karatu Community Park and Children's Playground

In 2007, FoTZC collaborated with Judi Wineland and Rick Thomson, co-founders and co-directors of Thomson Safaris, and the town of Karatu on a project to develop a community space. The group determined that a children’s playground would be a fantastic addition to the town. After purchasing the materials, the Wineland-Thomson family worked side by side with Tanzanian families to build the colorful playground, which was made predominately from recycled milk jugs. Parts of the grounds were cleared and prepared for other community uses. Now the centerpiece of a community project to preserve and improve public green space in the Ngorongoro Highlands, the Karatu Community Park and Children’s Playground is used by the children and adults of Karatu alike.
